Many of us have grail watches that will some day grace our wrists. For me, the grail is the IWC Mark XVIII Petite Prince. My taste in watches is simple. I’m a flieger slash pilot slash field watch guy. From the looks of the videos on Youtube and pictures on Instagram, many of you share a similar a fondness.
In this post, I’m going to share with you seven alternative watches to the IWC Mark XVIII. While you are saving your money for the IWC, have a look at these solid choices. The options I’ll be outlining range in price from approximately $2,500 down to $70.
Before we get started let’s gaze at the benchmark in this case.
IWC Mark XVIII Petite Prince
Case Diameter – 40mm · Case Height – 11mm · Crown – Screw Down
Water Resistance – 6bar · Crystal – Sapphire · Power Reserve – 42hr
Lug Width – 20mm · Movement – 35111 Automatic (ETA based)
The Petite Prince has nice proportions with a solid movement beating at 28,800vph. Typical of old-school fleigers, the soft-iron inner case protects the watch from magnetism. The only knock I have against the watch is the 6 bar water resistance. Then again, it’s not meant for swimming.
Oris Big Crown Pro Pilot Big Date
Case Diameter – 41mm · Case Height – 12mm · Crown – Screw Down
Water Resistance – 10bar · Crystal – Sapphire · Power Reserve – 38hr
Lug Width – 20mm · Movement – Sellita SW220-1 Automatic
To me, this Oris is the best alternative to the IWC. Why? Well it’s the blue dial, Swiss made automatic movement beating at 28,800vph, high-quality brown strap and general look of the watch. Oris produces stunning watches with a solid build. In fact, the Oris has a 10 bar water resistance at 1/3 of the cost to the IWC. You will not go wrong having this in your collection.
Longines Spirit prestige Edition
Case Diameter – 40mm · Case Height – 13mm · Crown – Screw Down
Water Resistance – 10bar · Crystal – Sapphire · Power Reserve – 64hr
Lug Width – 20mm · Movement – L888.4 ETA Automatic
The beautiful sunburst dial and simple flieger features make this a viable alternative. Although the movement vibrates at 25,200, this beauty comes with a screw-down crown and 10 bar water resistance. Longines has a storied past in military slash aviation watches and this one follows in that tradition. You are also getting a COSC certified watch with a silicone balance-spring. Oh, this edition comes with a leather strap, and steel bracelet and a Nato.
Laco Pilot Watches Basic Augsburg Blaue Stunde 39
Case Diameter – 39mm · Case Height – 11.55mm · Crown – Pull/Push
Water Resistance – 5bar · Crystal – Sapphire · Power Reserve – 42hr
Lug Width – 18mm · Movement – Miyota 821a Automatic
Laco’s fliegers are solid choices for functional everyday wear. You’re getting a workhorse Miyota automatic movement and sturdy German finishing. The proportions on this watch are friendly to many wrists. You will not be taking this one swimming with 5 bar water resistance.
Stowa Flieger Classic Blue Dial
Case Diameter – 40mm · Case Height – 10.2mm · Crown – Pull/Push
Water Resistance – 5bar · Crystal – Sapphire · Power Reserve – 38hr
Lug Width – 20mm · Movement – ETA 2824-2 Automatic
Another solid German built flieger that comes either in automatic or hand winding. Both movements are Swiss ETAs. So, you know you have a solid movement with a sturdy build. If you are looking for a simple blue dial flieger this might be your watch. Again, if I have a knock on this watch its the 5 bar water resistance. This is a great watch for the money.
Case Diameter – 38mm · Case Height – 10.2mm · Crown – Pull/ Push
Water Resistance – 3bar · Crystal – Hardlex · Power Reserve – 38hr
Lug Width – 18mm · Movement – Seiko 7s26c Automatic
Coming way down on the price scale we have this awesome entry level watch. While you can get this watch in different color ways, my focus is the blue dial. The bead blasted 38mm case fits many wrists like a glove. With 3 bar water resistance, you will not be swimming with this one. After you ditch the cheap strap that comes with this timepiece, you will have a perfect everyday watch.
Citizen Chandler Eco-Drive
Case Diameter – 42mm · Case Height – 10.7mm · Crown – Pull/ Push
Water Resistance – 10bar · Crystal – Mineral Glass · Power Reserve – N/A
Lug Width – 21mm · Movement – Eco-Drive
Coming in at 42mm, this timepiece is a little larger than many of the others listed. As well, this one is not an automatic watch. Rather, the Chandler is solar powered. I could not pass up listing this watch for its flieger style. With 10 bar water resistance and solar power, this watch is pretty close to set and forget. C’mon this one even adds the nice touch of an onion like crown. If I’m going to buy a non-automatic flieger, this would be the watch for me. This watch should be a strong consideration for any flieger lovers.
